If you’ve cleared NEET UG, the next big hurdle is the counselling round. It’s the stage where you turn your exam score into a seat in a medical college. The process can feel like a maze, but with the right info you can move quickly and avoid common mistakes.
First, make sure your NEET result is officially published on the NTA website. You’ll need the roll number, scorecard PDF, and a valid ID to log in later. Keep these documents in a dedicated folder – digital or paper – so you don’t waste time searching for them when the portal opens.
The counselling authority releases a schedule a few weeks after the results. For 2025, expect the registration window to open in early August and close by the end of the month. Mark these dates on your calendar and set a reminder a day before the portal goes live.
Registration is simple: go to the official counselling website, create a user ID, and fill in basic personal details. When asked for your NEET rank, enter it exactly as it appears on your scorecard. A small registration fee is usually required; have a debit/credit card handy to avoid delays.
After registration, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a login link. Use that link to access the dashboard, where you can start filling out your choice list.
Each college and each course has a cutoff rank – the highest rank that secured a seat in the previous year. These cutoffs are published as “opening” and “closing” ranks. Use them as a guide, not a rule. If your rank is better than the closing rank, you have a good chance of getting that college.
When you build your choice list, rank the colleges you prefer from most to least desirable. The system allocates seats round‑by‑round, starting with your top choice. If you’re not allotted a seat in the first round, you move to the next round with the same list, unless you choose to modify it.
Keep an eye on the ‘seat matrix’ – it shows how many seats are available for each category (General, OBC, SC, ST, PwD). Seats fill up fast in popular colleges, so you might need to add backup options early on.
After each round, you’ll receive an allotment letter on your dashboard. This letter tells you the college, course, and seat number. You have a limited window (usually 7‑10 days) to accept the offer, pay the admission fee, and submit required documents.
If you miss the acceptance deadline, your seat is forfeited and offered to the next eligible candidate. So, set a reminder as soon as you get the letter.
In case you’re not satisfied with the allotment, you can opt for a “cancellation and re‑entry” in the next round, but this reduces your chances of getting a top college. Weigh the risk before you decide.
Finally, once you accept a seat, you’ll need to complete the verification process – usually at the college’s admission cell. Bring your original certificates, NEET scorecard, category certificate, and any other documents the college asks for.
That’s the full cycle: register, fill choices, wait for rounds, accept the seat, and verify. Follow the steps closely, stay organized, and you’ll turn your NEET rank into a medical seat without hassle.
