Big Leap for Electric Cars: Tesla Model Y Arrives in India

The long wait is finally over—Tesla has launched the Model Y in India, making a serious play for the fast-growing electric car market. This isn't just another SUV entering showrooms. The Model Y marks Tesla’s first official entry into India, and the buzz is huge. There are two variants to pick from: the base Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) priced at ₹59.89 lakh, and the Long Range RWD, which comes at ₹67.89 lakh (both ex-showroom).

The key figures? The standard RWD Model Y travels up to 500 km on a single charge, certified by WLTP standards. Feeling adventurous? The Long Range RWD variant stretches things even further with a claimed 622 km range, putting those long, intercity drives well within reach. Speed fans are covered too. The RWD does 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range RWD shaves that down to 5.6 seconds. Both versions top out at 201 km/h—plenty for Indian roads.

Tesla didn’t hold back with style either. Buyers get to pick from six striking exterior shades: Stealth Grey comes as standard, but options like Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red are up for grabs if you’re ready to pay an extra ₹1.25–1.85 lakh depending on the choice. Want to spruce up the cabin? The premium black-and-white interior theme costs another ₹95,000.

Tech, Comfort, and Road Presence: Tesla’s Playbook for India

What about the much-hyped Tesla tech? Full Self-Driving (FSD) isn’t active yet, but there's a promise it will be offered as a ₹6 lakh upgrade when the government gives the nod. Still, you won’t feel shortchanged on features. The Long Range RWD model ships with smart perks like a 360-degree camera setup, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), a rear-seat touchscreen, and wireless support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay—delivering a genuinely high-tech ride.

Charging anxiety? Tesla plans to set up its Supercharger network, kicking things off with four stations and 16 chargers around Mumbai. The Model Y supports quick charging that can power up the battery in around 15 minutes for those high-speed stops.

Finances are also within reach for an aspirational segment. If you’re looking at the standard RWD, you can get started with a ₹6.20 lakh down payment and monthly EMIs of around ₹1.14 lakh. The Long Range version sees those figures rise slightly, with a ₹7.01 lakh initial outlay and ₹1.29 lakh monthly payments.

For those waiting for a global tech icon to shake up India’s auto scene, the Model Y brings EV practicality, performance, and brand power in one sharp package. No more waiting for Tesla to come here—the EV game just got a lot more interesting.
